Additional information:
The positive and negative contacts of the Samsung INR21700-50GB batteries differ from other Samsung models. The “washer” on the positive contact is smaller, and a ring has appeared on the negative. The same ring appeared on the third revision
of the Samsung INR18650-25S
.
Essentially, this is a circular reduction in the thickness of the metal of the body (groove). If the pressure inside the cell increases critically in this place, the body will collapse and the pressure will be released. In addition, the collapse pressure of the body will be less than if there were no such ring. This is an additional security measure.
New Samsung battery labeling
Those who look more closely will notice that the battery markings are slightly different from what everyone is used to. That's right, in late 2023 - early 2024, Samsung began to switch to a new labeling of its cells.
In the new marking, the inscription Samsung disappeared, and instead of it the abbreviation SDI (Samsung SDI Co., Ltd.) appeared. The minimum capacity of the model and a QR code also appeared.
Main characteristics of Samsung INR21700-50GB
The nominal capacity of the new Samsung INR21700-50GB model is 5000 mAh, this is the “standard” for low-current models of the 21700 format. The minimum allowable capacity is 4900 mAh. In fact, the batteries we tested showed a capacity of 5000 to 5100 mAh.
Maximum continuous discharge current 9.8 amps. The same as the Samsung INR21700-50G and Samsung INR21700-50E.
The standard charging current is 1.6 A. The maximum charging current is 4.9 A. Remember that charging with maximum current (more precisely, heating during charging) significantly reduces battery life.
The battery life of the Samsung INR21700-50GB is at least 1000 charge/discharge cycles, until the capacity loss reaches 80%. But this comes with certain conditions. Charge with a current of 1.6 A to a voltage of 4.125 V (and not to the full 4.2 V). And a discharge current of 4.9 A to a voltage of 3.0 V (and not to the standard 2.5 V). For the sake of fairness, it should be noted that when the charge voltage decreases and the discharge voltage increases, the service life increases for all lithium-ion batteries.
The internal resistance of the Samsung INR21700-50GB according to the datasheet is in the range of 8-18 mOhm. In fact, it is usually 10-14 mOhm, which is exactly in the middle of the range of declared values.

Load testing
Load testing was performed on a Rigol DL3021 electronic load at currents from 1 to 15 amperes. The test results are presented in the graph below.
The test battery at a current of 1 ampere showed a capacity of 5100 mAh, which exceeds the nominal value by a margin.
In all tests up to currents of 15 amperes, the battery capacity exceeded 5000 mAh.
